After their victory in El Clásico, it was only a matter of time. Last night, Barcelona completed the formality — defeating Espanyol to secure the La Liga title just one season after missing out.
The Catalan Derby took place at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium, where Spanish giants Barcelona secured a 2–0 win.
With this triumph, Barcelona have now won 28 La Liga titles. Real Madrid still top the all-time leaderboard with 36 La Liga titles.
Under new German manager Hansi Flick, Barcelona secured a domestic double in his very first season — adding the La Liga trophy to their Copa del Rey success. Earlier in January, they had also demolished Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final. Barcelona exited the Champions League from the semifinal stage.
In 36 matches, Barcelona have claimed 27 wins and 4 draws, bringing their points tally to 85. Real Madrid sit second with 78 points from the same number of games.
Barcelona’s first goal came in the 53rd minute. From the right side outside the box, Lamine Yamal played a one-two with Dani Olmo and charged forward. Surrounded by two to three defenders, the 17-year-old winger found space and fired a powerful left-footed shot from 20 yards out. The ball rocketed into the top far corner of the net.
In the 6th minute of added time, López doubled the lead — sealing the title — by calmly converting a pass from Yamal.
