In a tragic head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on the Sunamganj-Sylhet road, three people, including two students, were killed, and two others were injured.
The accident occurred around 1:30 PM on Wednesday in the Bahadurpur village area of Sadar Upazila. All the casualties were passengers or the driver of the auto-rickshaw.
The deceased were identified as students Afsana Jahan Khushi (18) and Sneha Chakraborty (17), along with Shafiqul Islam (55). The injured individuals are Oishi Rani Pal (18) and the auto-rickshaw driver, Rasid Mia (45).
Sneha Chakraborty was returning to her home in Sunamganj town by auto-rickshaw after completing admission procedures at Sunamganj University of Science and Technology. Her family home is in Joykals village, Shantiganj Upazila. Afsana Jahan, a second-year student at the Textile Institute in Shantiganj Upazila, was the daughter of Delowar Hossain, a resident of Arpin Nagar in Sunamganj town. Shafiqul Islam was a resident of Alipara in Sunamganj town.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the auto-rickshaw was traveling from Shantiganj to Sunamganj town with passengers when it collided head-on with a Sylhet-bound passenger bus in the Bahadurpur area. The auto-rickshaw was severely mangled, resulting in the immediate deaths of three individuals. Two others were rescued in critical condition.
Following the accident, the bus driver and assistant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. A passenger on the bus, Chhoton Das, recounted that he was seated at the back when he felt the bus jolt in the Bahadurpur area. He later noticed the bus stopped at the edge of the road, with the driver and assistant quickly leaving the scene.
Sunamganj’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Md. Zakir Hossain, confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The injured were admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. The bus has been seized, and efforts are underway to apprehend the driver and assistant.
