The month of December, the month of victory achieved through the Great War of Liberation, begins today. This victory is the signature of independence achieved in exchange for 30 lakh martyrs and the honour of two lakh mothers and sisters.

The most significant event in the long political history of Bangladesh is the Great War of Liberation in 1971. The social, political, and economic aspirations of the Bengali nation, spanning thousands of years, were fulfilled this month through a historic armed struggle for independence.

The Bengali nation's greatest achievement, the unforgettable and glorious final victory of the Liberation War, was attained on the 16th of this month. Bengalis gained self-identity across the globe as an independent nation. They acquired their own territory and their own national flag featuring a red sun on a green field. The nationalism that developed on the basis of language achieved completeness when independence was declared through victory after a bloody war on the sixteenth of December.

This December is also a month of poignant grief, as this achievement, while fulfilling the thousand-year-old dreams of the Bengalis, came at the cost of sacrificing many fresh lives and the honour of mothers and sisters.

In this month, the anti-liberation forces, with the help of their local collaborators—Razakars, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams—indulged in the brutal massacre of the nation's most talented and best children, the intellectuals. There is no second example in the world of such a heinous genocide aimed at rendering the entire nation intellectually void.

From the beginning of December 1971, news of the defeat of the barbaric Pakistani occupation forces started coming in from all directions, facing coordinated attacks on water, land, and air by the Joint Forces, composed of freedom fighters' guerrilla attacks and the Indian Allied Forces.

On December 16 of this year, the Pakistani forces were compelled to surrender at the historic Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka. Pakistani General Niazi signed the document of surrender. The final victory of the 9-month-long bloody Liberation War was achieved, and the nation attained the freedom of a thousand years of dreams.

On the black night of March 25, '71, the Pakistani executioner forces launched a sudden armed attack on the unarmed populace, killing thousands and imposing an unequal war on the unarmed Bengalis. Before his arrest by the Pakistani forces on the night of March 25, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formally declared independence. Responding to his call, the Bengali nation unitedly plunged into the Liberation War. On the night of March 25 itself, the Pakistani occupation forces faced armed resistance at the Rajarbagh Police Lines. The nation's final victory was achieved on December 16, at the cost of 30 lakh martyrs and the honour of 2 lakh mothers and sisters, after a long 9-month armed public war.
