International Friendly: Egypt Hold Spain to a Gritty Draw

Sylhettoday Desk |  ০১ এপ্রিল, ২০২৬

Spain endured a frustrating night as a resilient Egypt side held them to a goalless draw in an international friendly on Tuesday. Despite a late surge and a numerical advantage, the Spaniards failed to find the back of the net, a result that is set to cost them their top spot in the FIFA rankings.

The stalemate in Barcelona came just three days after Spain's commanding 3-0 victory over Serbia. Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated 60% of the possession and registered a staggering 26 shots, but only six of those were on target. In contrast, Egypt managed only four shots throughout the match.

#First Half: Egypt Strike the Post
Spain’s performance in the first half was lackluster and struggled to find rhythm. Egypt nearly took a shock lead in the 29th minute when Omar Marmoush unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, but fortunately for the hosts, the ball rattled the woodwork.

#Second Half: Missed Chances and a Red Card
Looking for a spark, the Spain coach made five substitutions at halftime, including resting stars Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo. The introduction of fresh legs briefly revitalized the side.

Ferran Torres had a golden opportunity early in the second half, but the Barcelona forward's weak effort went straight to the goalkeeper. Pedri and Fermín López also created several openings but failed to capitalize on their chances.

The dynamics shifted in the 84th minute when Egypt’s defensive midfielder Hamdi Fathi received a second yellow card, leaving the visitors with 10 men. However, even with the numerical advantage, the 2010 world champions could not break through Egypt's disciplined defense.
