Writers, journalists, and intellectuals have paid rich tribute to poet, journalist, writer, and researcher Soumitra Deb, describing him as a symbol of integrity, professionalism, and dedication in both literature and journalism. They said his creative works will continue to guide future generations, emphasizing that a creative soul never truly dies but lives on through his work.
Soumitra Deb passed away on April 15 last year. On the occasion of his first death anniversary, a commemorative programme was held on Friday (April 17) at the Syed Mujtaba Ali Auditorium (Public Library) in Moulvibazar, where speakers highlighted various aspects of his life and contributions.
The programme began with a one-minute silence in respect of the departed soul.
The event was organised by the Soumitra Smriti Sangsad. It was chaired by Sharmila Prentice and conducted by Advocate Dudley Derrick Prentice. People from different walks of life—including politicians, academics, writers, and cultural activists—attended the memorial gathering.
Speakers described Soumitra Deb as a multidimensional personality who was not only a poet and journalist but also an editor, researcher, and socially conscious thinker. In journalism, he served as assistant editor at Prothom Alo and Manabzamin, and was also the founding editor of the online news portal Red Times.
They recalled that he was a person who did not merely write words but lived them. Even in his final days, he remained active in journalism and engaged with various social issues.

In deeper reflections on his life and legacy, colleagues described Soumitra Deb Tito as a living current of poetry and journalistic thought.
Born on July 27, 1970, in Moulvibazar, he entered the world of literature and journalism in the 1990s and gradually established himself as a distinctive voice. He published nearly 40 books over his lifetime.
He is reported to have passed away on the morning of April 15, 2025, due to respiratory complications. His death sent shockwaves across literary and media circles.
Colleagues noted that even in his final years, he remained deeply engaged with social and political issues and consistently stood for change and justice.
