Defamation case filed in Habiganj against Matiur Rahman and two other journalists

A defamation case has been filed in Habiganj against Matiur Rahman, the editor of the daily Prothom Alo, and two other journalists of the newspaper.

Syed Humayun Kabir, the Executive Director of a local NGO named People's Assistant for Social Advancement (PASHA), filed the case in the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday.

The other accused in the case are Prothom Alo Senior Reporter Riyadul Karim and Habiganj Correspondent Hafizur Rahman Nion.

The case statement mentions that on February 5, a report titled "Individual-dependent 'PASHA' providing 10 thousand election observers" was published in the daily Prothom Alo. The following day, another follow-up report was published on the same issue. On February 7, an editorial was also published regarding this matter.

The plaintiff alleged that the publication of these reports caused a defamation worth 100 crore BDT. Judge Tanzina Rahman Tanin, presiding over the case filed under sections 500/501 of the Penal Code, has directed the District Intelligence Branch to investigate and submit a report.

Regarding this, Emran Ahmed, the Bench Assistant of the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, said that Syed Humayun Kabir, the Executive Director of 'PASHA', filed the case on Wednesday. The judge has ordered the District Intelligence Branch to investigate and provide a report.
