Police have recovered the body of a woman from beneath approximately eight feet of soil in the yard of her husband's house in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar, 19 days after she was allegedly murdered and secretly buried.

The victim, Jayeda Begum, 27, was allegedly strangled to death by her husband, Alamgir Hossain, 38, who has since been arrested and sent to jail by a court. Police have also detained another suspect, Jalal Ahmed, for questioning over his alleged involvement in the crime.

The body was recovered on Monday morning from the front yard of Alamgir's residence in Sonatiki village under Munshibazar Union in the presence of Moulvibazar Superintendent of Police Md Monirul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Nobel Chakma, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Abul Khayer, and Rajnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Bipul Sikder. Following the inquest, the body was sent to Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

According to police and local sources, Jayeda Begum, daughter of Abdul Hannan of Sonatiki village under Munshibazar Union, was married to Alamgir Hossain of Rajnagar Tea Estate. The couple had a six-year-old son.

Speaking to this correspondent, Abdul Hannan said Alamgir repeatedly claimed that his daughter had travelled to Saudi Arabia. "When he failed to provide any proof, local public representatives handed him over to the police. Later, he confessed to killing my daughter. We want justice," he said.

Family members became suspicious after they failed to contact Jayeda for several weeks while Alamgir insisted that she had gone abroad. On July 3, Abdul Hannan filed a General Diary (GD No. 142, dated July 3, 2026) with Rajnagar Police Station.

The investigation was assigned to Sub-Inspector Arup Sarkar. During questioning on July 5, Alamgir again claimed that his wife had left for Saudi Arabia on June 19. However, inconsistencies in his statements prompted police to take him into custody for further interrogation.

During intensive questioning, Alamgir allegedly confessed that on the night of June 17, at around 9:00pm, he, along with an accomplice, strangled his wife following a family dispute. He then buried the body in a pit about eight feet deep in the yard of his house the following night in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Based on his confession, police conducted a search operation and recovered the partially decomposed body from the burial site.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajnagar Police Station Md Farid Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, who is currently on leave, told Sylhet Today News over the phone that Alamgir had admitted to killing his wife during preliminary interrogation. He has been produced before a court and sent to jail, while a murder case has been filed in connection with the incident.

The OC said police had questioned Aminul Islam and Nurul Mia as suspects before releasing them, while Jalal Ahmed remains in custody for further interrogation. Legal action will be taken if evidence of his involvement is found.

Police are also investigating whether anyone else was involved in the murder. Further legal steps will be taken based on the investigation and the autopsy report.
