Labour, Employment, and Expatriates' Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury has reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving railway services in Sylhet and advancing the much-discussed Sylhet–Jaflong rail link project, following inspections of several key railway stations and a field visit to the proposed rail corridor.

During his visit to Sylhet on Saturday, the minister inspected Shaistaganj, Sreemangal, Bhanugachh, and Kulaura railway stations, reviewing passenger amenities, cleanliness, and overall service standards. He also interacted with passengers and local residents to hear their concerns regarding train schedules, station facilities, and infrastructure shortcomings.

The minister directed railway officials to take prompt measures to address existing problems and enhance passenger services. He stressed the importance of maintaining clean, safe, and passenger-friendly stations, adding that surprise inspections would continue to ensure service quality.

Later in the day, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, accompanied by Railway Ministry Secretary Md Fahimul Islam, Bangladesh Railway Director General Md Afzal Hossain, and other senior officials, visited the proposed route of the Sylhet–Jaflong railway project.

The delegation reviewed technical feasibility, land-related issues, infrastructure requirements, and potential implementation challenges associated with the proposed rail line.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, the minister said the government was moving forward with the project and expected visible progress within the next month.

The Sylhet–Jaflong rail link will establish direct railway connectivity with one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. The project is expected to boost tourism, facilitate passenger movement, and contribute significantly to the regional economy, he said.

He also noted that the government is placing special emphasis on expanding the railway network in Sylhet alongside the ongoing modernisation of the Dhaka–Sylhet rail corridor.

According to railway officials, assessments are currently underway on the condition of railway stations and tracks from Brahmanbaria to Sylhet. At the same time, preliminary preparations and feasibility evaluations for the proposed Sylhet–Jaflong railway line are progressing.

Officials believe the project, once implemented, could open a new chapter in rail connectivity in northeastern Bangladesh while strengthening Sylhet's tourism-driven economy and regional transportation network.
