Three held over bank, bKash scam in Habiganj, Tk 6.65 lakh recovered

The Cyber Crime Monitoring Cell of the Detective Branch (DB) of Habiganj Police has arrested three alleged members of a fraud ring, including its alleged mastermind, for reportedly cheating people through banks and bKash by promising Canadian visas.

Police also recovered Tk 6.65 lakh allegedly embezzled through the scam and seized four mobile phones during the operation.

Acting on the instructions of Habiganj Superintendent of Police Md Tarek Mahmud, a DB team conducted raids with the help of technology in different areas of Bogura, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari and arrested the three suspects.

The arrestees are Md Naim Shah, 23, son of Dulal Shah of Belpukur Shahpara in Saidpur upazila of Nilphamari; Md Sagar Islam, 25, of Hazarirhat Shahpara; and Md Babu Islam, 45, from the same area.
According to police, Naim Shah is the alleged mastermind of the gang.

Police said the gang had been cheating people for some time by using videos of other individuals and fake mobile numbers resembling Canadian numbers to lure victims with promises of arranging Canadian visas.

The suspects allegedly gained access to victims' banking apps and email accounts and subsequently withdrew money through online transactions.

According to the complaint, the gang took control of the banking app and email account on the mobile phone of a victim from Nabiganj and allegedly siphoned off Tk 21.536 lakh through online transactions. Of the amount, police recovered Tk 6.65 lakh during the operation.

The victim later filed a case with Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station.

The case was filed on August 12, 2026, under relevant provisions of the Cyber Security Act 2026, along with Sections 406, 420, 506 and 34 of the Penal Code.

Police said the arrestees were produced before a court and that further investigation is underway to determine whether others were involved in the scam and to recover the remaining money.
