Election office employee detained while trying to cross Sreemangal border

A data entry operator of the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office in Sunamganj was detained by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while allegedly attempting to cross into India through the Sreemangal border in Moulvibazar on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

A patrol team of the Gutibari Border Outpost (BOP), under Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), carried out a routine operation in the Monglambasti area at around 6:30pm to prevent illegal crossings along the border.

During the operation, the BGB team detained Sushanta Chandra Biswas, 34, near border pillar No. 1939/M as he was allegedly trying to cross the zero line and enter India, according to a press release issued by the BGB on Monday, September 21.

Sushanta is a resident of Sachail village in Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj. He joined the Election Office in 2016 and is currently working as a data entry operator at the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office.

The BGB said Sushanta had been absent from his workplace for around a month without authorised leave. The authorities had been searching for him following his prolonged absence.

Further legal action in connection with the incident is under process, BGB said.
