Three CNG passengers killed in bus collision in Sreemangal

Three passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were killed after a passenger bus collided head-on with the vehicle in Sreemangal of Moulvibazar tonight.

The accident occurred around 8:30pm on Tuesday (September 22) in the Lachhana area, in front of Satgaon Highway Police Station on the Dhaka-Sylhet regional highway.

The deceased were identified as Joy Singh (23), son of Amrit Singh of Mazdihi area under Bairabganj Bazar in Sreemangal, Md Anwar (40), of Sreemangal, and Pappu (21), also of Sreemangal.

Confirming the deaths over the phone, Mominul Islam, officer-in-charge of Satgaon Highway Police Station, said the accident took place when a passenger bus of Alam Asia Paribahan, travelling from Sreemangal towards Mirpur, collided head-on with the CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.

The impact left the auto-rickshaw mangled and its three passengers critically injured.

With the help of locals, police rescued the injured and took them to Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

Dr Navid Raiyan Bin Shahid, an emergency department physician at the health complex, said the three men were brought to the hospital around 9pm, but they had died before being taken there.

OC Mominul Islam said police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the accident and carried out rescue operations.

He said the bus involved in the accident had been seized and the identities of the deceased had been confirmed.

The bodies are being sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for autopsies, and necessary legal procedures will be taken, he added.
