Despite a spirited performance fueled by the roaring support of expatriate fans, Bangladesh concluded their Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign on a somber note, suffering a 1-0 defeat against Singapore on Tuesday.
In the final match of the third round of the Asian Cup Qualifiers at Singapore National Stadium, Javier Cabrera’s men failed to capitalize on their chances, losing both legs to the hosts. Singapore had previously secured a 2-1 victory in the first leg held in Dhaka.
With this win, Singapore finished at the top of Group C to secure their spot in the main event. Bangladesh ended their campaign in third place with 5 points from six matches, recording one win, two draws, and three losses.
First Half: Against the Run of Play
Coach Cabrera made two changes to the starting XI, bringing back regular goalkeeper Mitul Marma and handing a start to Sheikh Morsalin. Captain Jamal Bhuyan, however, started on the bench for the second consecutive game and did not feature in the match.
Both teams struggled to test the goalkeepers in the opening minutes. Bangladesh showed promise in the 15th minute when Sohel Rana sent a cross for Shomit Som, but his header went wide. In the 20th minute, Mitul Marma made a crucial save against Ikhsan Fandi to keep the deadlock intact.
The decisive moment came in the 31st minute. Mitul managed to parry Glenn Kweh’s initial shot, but the rebound fell to Ikhsan Fandi, who set up Harris Stewart. Stewart made no mistake with a clinical diagonal finish to put Singapore ahead.
Bangladesh missed a golden opportunity to equalize in the 39th minute. After Morsalin’s shot was blocked, Faysal Ahmed Fahim attempted to strike the rebound but went down under pressure. Despite appeals for a penalty, the referee remained unmoved.
Second Half: Woodwork and Wasted Chances
Bangladesh intensified their attack after the break. In the 70th minute, Cabrera introduced Bishwanath Ghosh and Mirajul Islam. Singapore briefly thought they had doubled their lead through Ilhan Fandi, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The frustration peaked for Bangladesh in the 79th minute. Hamza Choudhury delivered a pinpoint cross to Mirajul, whose placing shot beat the keeper but rattled the goalpost and stayed out.
In the final minutes, Cabrera threw on Kazem Shah Kirmani and Rahmat Mia to bolster the offense. During stoppage time, Mirajul got a touch on a ball from Shahriar Emon but couldn't beat the Singaporean goalkeeper. A last-ditch header from Hamza was also cleared by a defender, sealing a narrow victory for the hosts.
While Bangladesh showed flashes of brilliance through Hamza and Shomit, the inability to finish clinical moves left the team with a bitter taste as they exited the qualifiers.
