Four-Time Champions Italy to Miss Third Consecutive World Cup

Italy’s wait to return to the world stage continues as the four-time champions were knocked out of the World Cup qualifiers, marking the third consecutive tournament where they will remain spectators. Despite a valiant effort by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Italy fell 4-1 on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European Play-off final on Tuesday night.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, but Italy’s clinical edge vanished in the shootout, sealing their fate as they miss the World Cup for the third time in a row (2018, 2022, and now 2026).

Match Highlights: Early Lead and a Red Card
Italy took the lead in the 15th minute following a defensive blunder by the hosts. A poor back-pass from a Bosnian defender was intercepted by Nicolo Barella, who set up Moise Kean. The 26-year-old forward made no mistake, firing a strike from outside the box into the back of the net.

However, the momentum shifted in the 41st minute when Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni received a straight red card for fouling Memic outside the penalty area. Reduced to 10 men, Italy was forced into a defensive shell for the remainder of the game.

Donnarumma’s Heroics vs. Bosnia’s Pressure
Bosnia dominated possession (65%) and registered a staggering 30 shots, 11 of which were on target. Gianluigi Donnarumma kept Italy alive with 10 spectacular saves, frustrating the Bosnian frontline time and again.

Italy had a golden chance to double their lead in the 60th minute when Kean found himself in a one-on-one situation with the Bosnian keeper, but he fired his shot over the bar. Bosnia finally found the equalizer in the 79th minute. After Donnarumma parried a header from Edin Dzeko, Haris Tabakovic was perfectly positioned to tap in the rebound from close range.

The Penalty Heartbreak
With no further goals in extra time, the match went to a shootout. Italy's nerves failed them as Esposito sent the first kick flying over the crossbar and Bryan Cristante struck the woodwork. Bosnia, clinical from the spot, converted all four of their penalties to secure their first World Cup appearance in 12 years (last qualified in 2014).

Other Results
In another European Play-off final, the Czech Republic secured their World Cup ticket by defeating Denmark 3-1 on penalties after the match ended 2-2 following extra time.
