Brazil announced a squad of 23 players yesterday for the upcoming Copa America and their two friendlies.
Among the new faces in this squad is 24-year-old striker Evanilson, hailing from Porto. Evanilson has received his first national team call-up due to Richarlison's injury.
Brazil coach Darival Junior explained the call-up for Evanilson, stating, "Evanilson has caught our attention. He understands his role very clearly. He is a very attractive player. If he can do what he does at the club level, it will be delightful. We have faith in him despite Richarlison's injury."
In recent times, there has been much talk about two young talents in Brazilian football, Endrick and Vitor Roque. Endrick, who is awaiting a move to Real Madrid, has also received a call-up to the Copa squad. On the other hand, Vitor Roque has joined Barcelona. Even a 19-year-old forward hasn't secured a place in Brazil's Copa squad. The question arises: why the sudden discussion about Evanilson?
Evanilson, born in Fortaleza, has been playing for Porto since 2020. Currently, he is experiencing the peak of his career. In the 2023-24 season, he scored 24 goals in 39 matches for Porto, including 5 goals in the Champions League group stage. He also scored a goal against the Belgian club Antwerp, following a hat-trick on their turf.
In the 2021-22 season, Evanilson tasted victory in Portugal's Primeira Liga with Porto. In his service for the club, he scored 21 goals in 46 matches, including 14 goals in 30 league matches.
Before stepping into Europe, Evanilson rose through the ranks at Fluminense in Brazil. He even got opportunities with the main team. In 2020, Porto acquired him from Fluminense for €8.8 million. In his debut season in Europe, Evanilson scored 6 goals in 5 matches for Porto's B team. In 2020, he also received a call-up to Brazil's under-23 squad.
