A total of 154 Bangladeshi nationals who were living in Libya returned to the country today (20 September).
A chartered flight of Buraq Air (UZ) carrying them landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7am this morning.
They were welcomed by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, and IOM ensured the safe return of the expatriates who have been residing in Libya as irregular citizens.
IOM provided Tk 6000 to each of the returnees along with some food items, medical treatment and temporary accommodation where necessary.
The foreign ministry, Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and IOM are working tirelessly to arrange the safe repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals detained in various detention centers in Libya.
Earlier, on February 23 this year, with the all-out efforts of the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and the direct cooperation of the International Migration Organization, 144 irregular Bangladeshis detained in different parts of Benghazi, Libya were returned to Dhaka by a chartered flight of Burak Air from Benghazi.
At that time, a post shared from the Facebook page of the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya informed that a total of 1390 Bangladeshis have been brought back from Libya since July 2023. They were held in isolated places, including various detention camps in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi.
