Did the cricketers really object to the female umpire?

Sathira Jakir Jessy

The news that the match umpire is a woman, and for this reason, several cricketers have expressed their objections, has gone viral on social media. Many Facebook users are criticizing Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, and Tamim Iqbal over this issue. Social media users are divided on this matter.

However, it is known that the incident is not about the identity of the female umpire Sathira under Jakir Jessy, but mainly about her experience.

Several media outlets reported that before the start of the Mohammedan vs. Prime Bank match at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on April 25, female field umpires under Sathira Jakir Jessy's supervision had sparked controversy among Prime Bank and Mohammedan cricketers. However, Mohammedan's official Tarikul Islam Titu clarified the actual incident.

He said, 'We did not raise any objection against Jessy. The match between Prime Bank and Mohammedan is a big match for us. Jessy has started officiating Premier Cricket matches in Dhaka this year. There is no division between boys and girls here. We were concerned whether Jessy, in her first year, could handle the excitement of such a big match. We did not want her to be an umpire just because she is a woman. That's not the issue.'

Tarikul Islam Titu said, 'We thought she was a new umpire, this year she got the responsibility of officiating List-A cricket matches for the first time. So, she lacks experience. We usually prefer senior umpires for such matches. We discussed whether she could handle officiating such a big match smoothly. However, we did not raise any formal objection.'

As a result, such discussions were initiated only by the officials of the two teams. Cricketers like Tamim, Mushfiq, and Riyad did not object.

On the other hand, regarding the appointment of a new female umpire in the important match of Mohammedan and Prime Bank, BCB director and chairman of the BCB Umpires Committee, Iftekhar Rahman Mitu, said, 'Look, I have been involved in club cricket in Dhaka for 40 years. I know, officiating big matches involving a female and a junior umpire is not an easy task. So should we not give the responsibility of officiating all those big matches to someone else? Jessy has already officiated international matches. She has also officiated in the women's cricket series between India and Bangladesh.'

He said, 'This year is the Women's Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh. Our female umpires are taking the responsibility of officiating the matches there. We are making efforts in that direction. That's why we are trying to groom Jessy in this way. She is new and inexperienced, that's right. But she needs to be groomed. And that's how the game will be officiated. We have entrusted the responsibility of officiating Mohammedan and Prime Bank matches to her in that spirit. There has been no formal objection from either Mohammedan or Prime Bank camps. However, some people have said that it would have been better not to keep Jessy as the umpire for such a big match.'

The chairman of the BCB Umpires Committee said, 'Actually, we have to train our Jessys. For this, we need everyone's cooperation and a generous attitude. Even though they are female, junior, and inexperienced, they will have to be groomed so that in the future, Jessy and others can officiate big matches smoothly. And if we don't groom them in domestic cricket, then where will we do it?'
