The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has been invited by Tulip Siddiq, a former UK minister and British MP, to a lunch or afternoon tea at her office in the House of Commons.
Tulip, who is keen to hold this meeting during Dr. Yunus's visit to London, seeks an opportunity for a personal conversation to resolve 'misunderstandings.'
According to a report published in the British daily The Guardian, Tulip recently sent a personal letter to Yunus amid controversy and political tensions in Bangladesh over corruption allegations. In the letter, she stated, 'Both of us are committed to public service. The current time is highly challenging for people like us in ensuring good governance, justice, and the rule of law. I am eager to know your thoughts on this matter.'
In the letter, Tulip further wrote, 'Drawing from my experience as Economic Secretary at the Treasury, I have always been interested in your work on economic and social development. I extend an invitation to you for lunch or tea at the House of Commons during your visit to London.'
Tulip Siddiq, the niece of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is the elected MP for Hampstead and Highgate in the UK. However, in recent times, Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has raised several allegations against her, sparking debates in both the UK and Bangladesh.
In her letter, Tulip mentioned, 'I have repeatedly had to face questions due to my familial connection with my aunt (Sheikh Hasina). I hope this meeting will help resolve the misunderstandings created by the ACC's allegations.'
She added, 'I have no property or business interests in Bangladesh. I was not born there, I do not live there, and my professional life is not based there either.'
Tulip alleged that the ACC is sending letters indiscriminately to addresses in Dhaka without any legal communication in London. Additionally, details of every 'fictitious investigation' are being leaked to the media, despite no formal contact with her legal team.
Some Bangladeshi media outlets have claimed that an arrest warrant has been issued against Tulip. However, she stated that she has not received any formal information regarding this. She claimed that a 'politically motivated smear campaign' is being orchestrated against her, driven by her aunt's political opponents.
The ACC alleges that Tulip and her mother, Sheikh Rehana, used their influence to seize 7,200 square feet of land in an area of the capital. However, Tulip's legal team has described these allegations as 'baseless' and 'politically motivated.'
Last year, Tulip Siddiq voluntarily surrendered to the UK body responsible for overseeing the conduct of ministers. However, no evidence of corruption was found against her, and she was cleared of charges in January of this year.
Investigator Laurie Magnus noted that no evidence was found regarding the source of Tulip's assets or any illegal gains. However, he opined that Tulip should have been more cautious given her family's political connections in Bangladesh.
Amid the ongoing controversy, Tulip resigned from her positions as Economic Secretary and City Minister at the Treasury. She explained, 'This controversy is causing confusion for Keir Starmer's new government, so I have decided to step aside.'
In the midst of this situation, Bangladesh's interim Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus will travel to London on Monday (June 9). It is known that during this visit, he will meet King Charles and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Tulip sees this visit as a potential opportunity for discussion.
Concluding her letter, Tulip wrote, 'I know you will surely understand how crucial it is to ensure that such news (ACC allegations) does not hinder my duties toward my constituents and my country.'
It remains uncertain whether Dr. Yunus will accept this invitation and meet Tulip Siddiq at her office.
