BNP Urges EC to Exclude Controversial Officials from Upcoming Elections

BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan has emphasized that officials with controversial records should not be assigned duties in the upcoming national election. He conveyed this message to the Election Commission (EC) during a meeting on Thursday.

A three-member BNP delegation met with Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission office to discuss the matter.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dr. Moyeen Khan stated that the past three national elections were marred by irregularities, describing them as a "farce in the name of voting." He pointed out that during those elections, many officials in the administration played politically motivated roles.

"We have informed the Election Commission that officials who have been shaped over the last 15 years will not change their mindset in just 15 months," Dr. Moyeen Khan said. "We have cautioned the EC to ensure that no controversial officials are given responsibilities in the upcoming election."

He further highlighted that a national election is a massive undertaking, with approximately 42,000 polling stations across 300 constituencies, requiring nearly 1 million personnel, including civil administration, police, and judicial officials. However, he noted that the administration has been politicized over the past 15 years, posing a significant challenge.

Dr. Moyeen Khan also stressed the importance of press freedom, stating that journalists should be able to perform their duties without obstruction. "BNP believes in the freedom of the press. After 17 years of struggle and the student-people's uprising, we have reached this point. We have urged the Election Commission to set a precedent by organizing a free and fair election," he added.

He emphasized that it is the EC’s responsibility to ensure a transparent and impartial electoral process.
