Merry Christmas, the biggest religious festival of the Christian community, is being celebrated today (December 25) across the country and the world with festivity and religious fervor.
The day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity, who was born on this day over two thousand years ago in Bethlehem, Palestine. Born to the Virgin Mary in a humble stable, Christians believe Jesus came to earth to guide humanity toward truth, beauty, and justice.
According to Christian belief, Mary became pregnant through divine intervention and the miraculous power of God. As foretold by an angel, the child was named Jesus. As he grew, Jesus preached the message of salvation to people bound by sin. To honor his life and teachings, followers of the faith celebrate this day through various religious rituals and festivities.
Celebrations in Bangladesh
Like the rest of the world, the Christian community in Bangladesh is celebrating the day with traditional zeal. Churches across the country have been illuminated with colorful lights, and homes are decorated with Christmas trees. Many followers have set up symbolic mangers (stable scenes) in their homes to commemorate Jesus’s birth in a stable.
In major cities, upscale hotels have also joined the festivities, decorating their premises with colorful lights, flowers, and grand Christmas trees to create a joyous atmosphere.
The formal rituals began on Wednesday evening with prayers and Christmas carols in various churches, including the Sylhet Presbyterian Church.
