Travel warning for US and Australian citizens in Bangladesh

The US Embassy and Australia High Commission have asked the citizens of their respective countries to be careful in traveling around the programs of political parties in view of the upcoming national elections.

The US Embassy in Dhaka and the Australian High Commission on Tuesday (July 11, 2023) updated their travel warnings and issued this warning.

The warning will be applicable to those traveling in major cities of the country including the capital Dhaka.

The US Embassy has warned its citizens to be vigilant as Bangladesh's parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held on or before January 2024.

Meanwhile, various political parties have started rallies and election-oriented activities. Political rallies and other activities are likely to increase as elections approach.

US citizens should remember that peaceful events can turn into conflict or violence at any time.

In such a situation, the embassy advises US citizens to avoid large gatherings and protests and move with caution.

Meanwhile, the Australian High Commission has said in a travel warning that various political activities including protests and rallies may increase before the national election by January next year.

These political activities can turn violent without warning. Because of this, citizens have been advised to avoid protests and gatherings.
