Yasmine walks three kilometers to college on one foot

Yasmine Akhter (20) regularly walks 3 km every day with one leg on crutches. She does not have one leg, although she has another leg, it is almost skinny.

Talking about Yasmine Akhtar from Ganchil village in Ward 9 of Char Elahi Union of Companiganj Upazila in Noakhali.

She has faced the reality of life at the age of one and a half, losing one leg. Despite the hardships, she has not succumbed to the struggles of life. Overcoming poverty and physical disability, Yasmine is currently studying in the 12th grade of the Humanities department at Dr. Bashir Ahmed College in the district headquarters.

The incident dates back to 2005 when her mother went to fetch water from the nearby house, leaving Yasmine lying on the bed. At that time, a fire broke out from a lantern kept nearby. Yasmine's both legs were burned in that fire. Later, upon medical advice, her left leg had to be amputated. The muscles of her right leg were severely injured.

Despite this, with determination and strength, she first enrolled in the local West Ganchil Government Primary School. After completing primary education, she passed the SSC from Ganchil High School. Currently, she walks three kilometers to the local Ganchil Bazar, and from there, she commutes by vehicle to attend classes at the college, located 13 kilometers away from her home. She has been enduring the burden of life this way. She receives a government stipend of 5,000 taka per year. But the support from the government is invaluable.

Yasmine Akhtar says, "I am studying with great difficulty. After completing my studies, I want to become a teacher. If I can get an artificial leg with everyone's help, it will be easy for me to fulfill my dreams."

Yasmine's father, Nurunnabi, says, "I am a day laborer. However, I will endure great hardship to educate my daughter. The addition of an artificial leg will advance her in society."

The principal of Dr. Bashir Ahmed College, AH Tanim, says, "We evaluate her hardship. At the same time, we applaud her efforts because what Yasmine has achieved is an inspiration and example to everyone."

The chairman of Dr. Bashir Ahmed College, Anjuman Ara Mukta, says, "Yasmine walks three kilometers to college on foot every day. She is a struggling young woman. Her story has become an inspiration through relentless efforts. Even though her day laborer father lost everything and had to carry her, she cannot walk naturally. If they could walk with an artificial leg, Yasmine could have walked normally."
