Gmail Introduces New AI Features: Automatic Email Summaries and Smart Replies

Google continues to enhance the user experience for tech enthusiasts by introducing innovative features. This time, Google Workspace users will benefit from a new automatic email summary feature in the Gmail app.

This feature will condense the key points of lengthy email threads or conversations into a concise format.

For instance, if you send an email and receive multiple replies back and forth, Gmail will automatically display the main points of the thread in a summary card.

Currently, this feature is available only to Google Workspace account holders on the iOS and Android apps.

Last year, with the launch of the Gemini side panel, Google introduced AI-powered summarization for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Gmail. However, users had to manually click the "Summarize this email" button to generate a summary.

With the latest update, a summary card will automatically appear at the top when opening an email thread.

Google’s AI assistant will analyze multiple messages in the thread to highlight the key points.

The summary will also update automatically when new messages are added. This feature is currently limited to emails written in English and requires the personalized smart features for Gmail, Chat, and Meet to be enabled.

The feature is not yet available on the desktop version or for standard Gmail accounts. However, in cases where automatic summaries are not generated, users can still use the "Summarize this email" button as before.

Beyond summaries, Gmail’s Gemini AI now assists in drafting new emails and searching for information within the inbox or Google Drive.

During the recent Google I/O 2025 conference, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced an upcoming feature called "Personalized Smart Replies." This feature will analyze a user’s previous emails and documents to generate reply drafts that align with their writing style.
