Following the attack on actress Azmeri Haque Badhon in Venice, Italy, leaders and activists of the local Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Party (NCP) went to an expatriate's house in Madaripur. Following the incident, the family of the Italy expatriate locked the house and went into hiding.

The expatriate involved in the attack in Italy has been identified as Monirul Hawlader (24). His ancestral home is in the Khalanikandi area of Dhurail Union under Madaripur Sadar Upazila. It is learned that Monirul was involved in the politics of Chhatra League.

The incident took place on Tuesday (September 8) morning. At one point, the family members locked the house and left. Later, the police visited the spot.

Fariha Rafiq, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Sadar Circle) of Madaripur, said, "After learning about the incident, police have been dispatched to Monirul's house since morning. The police also contacted his family. Since the incident occurred outside the country, action will be taken against him according to the laws of that country. No untoward incident has happened at Monirul's house yet. Police are on alert to ensure no one can attack their home. The local UP chairman has also been informed about the matter, and he is providing all necessary cooperation."

Italy expatriate Monirul Islam is the son of the late Shahjahan Hawlader of the Khalanikandi area in Dhurail Union. He was the organizational secretary of the Dhurail Union branch of the banned organization Chhatra League. He left the country after the '24 movement.

Monirul's cousin and neighbor, Rafiqul Islam, said, "Intelligence personnel started arriving at Monirul's house early in the morning. Panicked by this, all the family members fled. I cannot say where they went."

Monirul's home consists of two dilapidated tin-shed structures—one four-pitch and the other two-pitch. His mother and elder brother reside in the house. Monirul's stepbrother, Obaidul Hawlader, said, "A year and a half ago, Monirul moved to Italy via Libya through human traffickers at a cost of BDT 2.8 million. While in the area, he was involved with Chhatra League. Monirul has not yet been able to build a proper home in the village. A burden of debt hangs over his mother and brother's heads. Instead of earning money, he started participating in political party activities even after going abroad. As a stepbrother, he doesn't give me a single penny."

Aryan Sayem, Joint Convener of the district Chhatra Shakti, said, "In the morning, Ayan, a July warrior, came to Madaripur from Dhaka. Later, we went to Monirul's village home accompanied by the police. Monirul's house was locked. The family had left before we arrived. We stayed at Monirul's house for half an hour, and no one attempted to form a mob. We do not know if anyone did anything after we left."

Aryan Sayem informed that after their arrival, the local UP chairman also came to the spot, spoke with them, and took responsibility for ensuring justice regarding Monirul.

Habibur Rahman Hawlader, Chairman of Dhurail Union Parishad, said, "Monirul was involved in Chhatra League while in the country. I learned that he still does politics for Chhatra League while living abroad. However, committing such an incident was not right. Some people came in the morning, demanded justice against Monirul, and left. I have tightened security at the house, and the Sadar Police Station is also monitoring the matter."

Badhon traveled to Italy to attend the screening of the movie 'The Difficult Bride', directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. She is currently staying in the city of Mestre. The attack and harassment occurred on Monday night when she went to a local park with her brother and his family.
