On Wednesday (August 6), a tragic accident occurred around noon on the Sylhet-Sunamganj regional highway in the Bahadurpur area, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others due to a collision between a bus and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw.
The deceased were identified as Afsana Khushi, daughter of Dolowar Hossain and a first-year student at Sunamganj Textile Institute; Sneha Chakraborty, a student at Sunamganj University of Science and Technology, daughter of Bipul Chakraborty and Joyti Chakraborty, the latter being a head teacher in Joykals village, Shantiganj Upazila; and Shafiqul Islam, a resident of Alipara in the city.
According to reports, the two students were returning to the city in a CNG auto-rickshaw from Sunamganj University of Science and Technology and Sunamganj Textile Institute along with other passengers. During the journey, a head-on collision with an oncoming bus in the Bahadurpur area of Sadar Upazila claimed the lives of Shafiqul Islam (50) and Afsana Khushi (17) on the spot. Locals rescued three seriously injured individuals and rushed them to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, where another student, Sneha (18), succumbed to her injuries.
The bus driver fled the scene following the incident. Hundreds of people gathered near the accident site in Bahadurpur, causing a temporary halt in traffic.
Two other seriously injured individuals were transferred to M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet for advanced treatment.
Sunamganj Traffic In-charge Mohammad Hanif Mia confirmed the incident, stating, "We reached the spot after receiving news of the collision, recovered the three bodies, and sent them to the morgue at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital."
Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Zakir Hossain added, "The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The bus involved in the accident has been seized, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the driver and helper."
