Journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin Brutally Hacked to Death in Public After Live Report on Extortion

In Gazipur, a journalist was brutally hacked to death by miscreants on Thursday (August 7) night around 8:30 PM in the Chandna Chowrasta area. Earlier that afternoon, the journalist had gone live on Facebook, reporting on extortion activities targeting footpaths and shops in the same area.

The victim, Md. Asaduzzaman Tuhin (38), was a staff reporter for the daily newspaper Protidiner Kagoj in Gazipur. His hometown was Bhatipara village in Fulbaria Upazila, Mymensingh. A video of his killing has gone viral on Facebook.

According to police sources, Asaduzzaman Tuhin resided in the Chowrasta area of Gazipur city. Due to prior enmity, five to six assailants chased him with sharp weapons around 8:30 PM in the Chandna Chowrasta area. Seeking refuge, Tuhin ran into a tea stall in the Eidgah Market. However, the attackers followed him inside and began hacking him indiscriminately. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot, after which the assailants fled.

A local businessman, Khayrul Islam, said, “I was in my shop when Tuhin ran in, seeking shelter. Three men entered and hacked him to death. Two others stood outside with machetes. When I tried to intervene, they threatened to kill me as well.” He added, “Many people watched the incident, but no one came forward to help.”

A review of Asaduzzaman’s Facebook profile revealed that he had gone live on Thursday afternoon, exposing extortion activities targeting footpaths and shops in the Chandna Chowrasta area. Additionally, around 8 PM, he shared a video of the Chowrasta area, writing, “Scenes of reckless road crossing, Gazipur Chowrasta.”

Two hours earlier, he posted a photo near the Joydebpur rail gate, commenting, “Those who travel through Joydebpur know this road. Neglecting drain repairs is ruining such a beautiful road. Public assets are being wasted due to the authorities’ negligence.”

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Md. Robiul Hasan said, “We have obtained some video footage and clues related to the incident. We have launched an operation to apprehend those involved. The brutal murder of a journalist in this manner is deeply tragic.”

Shahid Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Basan Police Station in Gazipur, confirmed that the police recovered the journalist’s body and sent it to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College in Gazipur for an autopsy.
