In Kulaura, Moulvibazar, a teenager was arrested for posting a video on Facebook in which he declared, “I am Bangabandhu’s soldier, I am Sheikh Hasina’s follower.”
On Saturday night, a raid was conducted in the Bhangeripatti area of Kulaura municipality, leading to the arrest of the teenager, identified as Fahim Islam.
He is a ninth-grade student at a local school, though police claim he is 19 years old.
In the video posted on Facebook, the teenager also expressed that the Awami League would return to power.
Fahim, originally from Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet, comes from a family where his father works at a salon and his mother is a domestic worker. They live in a rented house in the Bhangeripatti area of Kulaura.
The 47-second video, which went viral, shows the teenager sitting on a chair in a room with a table in front of him. A banner featuring the late BNP leader M Saifur Rahman is displayed on the wall behind him. In the video, he says, “Sheikh Hasina was the only proud woman of Bangladesh. Insha’Allah, she will return one day. Insha’Allah, the Awami League will return. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangla. I am Sheikh Hasina’s follower. I can proudly say I am Bangabandhu’s soldier. Insha’Allah, we will meet again on the streets. Thank you.”
Police reported that after the video spread on Facebook, Fahim was detained during a raid at his home around 10 PM on Saturday. He was subsequently arrested in connection with a case filed at Kulaura Police Station, accusing him of attacking anti-discrimination student protesters during the July mass uprising. The case report claimed that Fahim was actively involved in supporting “fascists” during the uprising and noted his age as 19.
Kulaura Police Station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibur Rahman stated that during initial questioning, the teenager claimed he acted without understanding the consequences. He was sent to the Moulvibazar court today.
