A mob, identifying themselves as "July Warriors," surrounded a police station in the Madaripur-1 (Shibchar) constituency on Wednesday evening. The protest was triggered by several Awami League leaders publicly joining the election campaign of BNP candidate Nadira Akhtar.
The protest, held under the banner of "General People of Shibchar," took place on Wednesday (February 4). The participants identified themselves as activists who took part in the July uprising.
The unrest follows an incident on Tuesday evening, where at least 20 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League—who had been in hiding—attended a yard meeting for BNP candidate Nadira Akhtar at Khan Bari in Shibchar Municipality. During the event, they pledged their support to ensure her victory, chanted "Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu" slogans, and openly campaigned for the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol.
According to police and protest sources, the "July Warriors" of Shibchar alleged that members of the banned Awami League are resurfacing to destabilize the upcoming election. They gathered under the banner of "General People" and marched through the upazila headquarters, ending their demonstration in front of the Shibchar Police Station.
About fifty protesters demonstrated outside the station and submitted a memorandum to the Officer-in-Charge (OC), Shafiqul Islam, demanding the arrest of the individuals involved.
Shahadat Hossain, speaking for the protesters, stated: "We have peacefully protested and submitted a memorandum to the OC. We have given a 24-hour ultimatum. If these Awami cohorts are not arrested within this timeframe, we will surround the police station with five thousand people. The people of Shibchar will not accept those who served a 17-year autocracy returning to public politics."
Shibchar Police Station OC Shafiqul Islam said, "The protesters identified themselves as warriors of the July movement. They demanded the arrest of Awami League members who are actively campaigning for various candidates. We have accepted their memorandum and assured them that legal action will be taken against those specifically accused in existing cases."
