‘Feluda’-famed actor Biplab Dasgupta passes away at 75

Acclaimed Bengali actor and elocutionist Biplab Dasgupta, widely recognised for his portrayal of the iconic detective ‘Feluda’, has passed away. He breathed his last at his residence on Friday afternoon (April 25) after battling prolonged illness. He was 75.

Family members said the veteran artiste had been suffering from multiple health complications for nearly a year and a half. He spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones.

Dasgupta had a career spanning over two decades across film, television and the performing arts. He made his big-screen debut with Shadow of Time in 2004 and went on to earn acclaim for his roles in films such as Baishe Srabon and Gumnaami, among others.

In 2019, he appeared in Debotar Grash, sharing screen space with renowned actors Soumitra Chatterjee and Naseeruddin Shah—a collaboration considered a notable highlight of his career.

Beyond cinema, Dasgupta was equally popular on television. His performances in serials such as Kuasha Jokhon, Rage Anurage, Sokhi, and Netaji left a lasting impression on audiences.

An alumnus of Jadavpur University, where he completed his master’s in English, Dasgupta began his professional journey as a schoolteacher. He later transitioned into voice-over work, recitation and advertising before ultimately establishing himself as a full-time actor.

His demise marks a significant loss to the Bengali cultural sphere. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, admirers and fans, remembering him as a dedicated and versatile artiste whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
